North Sea Race

The big event on the RNYC calendar this year was the race to Mandal on the Southernmost tip of Norway during the first week in August. There was an excellent turn out of 14 yachts, and the larger ones caught a fast weather window with stiff westerlies giving an exciting 50+ hour ride over the 340 mile race. The winner overall was Ed Watson’s Brighteyes with less than ten minutes in hand, on handicap, over the second yacht, Harold Isherwood’s Stormer. Joint Venture was third a few ‘handicap’ minutes later. Some of the smaller yachts were less fortunate, suffering many hours of alternate stormy and becalmed conditions. Whilst everyone arrived safely, the Norwegian Coastguard towing service had to be called upon for a rudderless Tagus. The hospitality of Reidar Eeg, Tirje Pettersen and their friends, the weather, and the scenery, were again so good that there are plans to go back for the millenium!
